Folk narratives are basically legends, also known as fairy tales, popular beliefs, proverbs and sometimes jokes. There is a tradition in folk narratives for them to be orally narrated, often by a elder person who will have the attention of a group. Folk tales often contain mythical and magical elements and usually have a moral message to help guide and influence the decisions of the listeners.  Many folk tales originate from a religious background to help emphasize the moral meaning.

Storytelling appears to be a tradition through most cultures and examples of folk narratives can be found from almost every culture. In Germany, Hansel and Gretel is an example of a folk narrative that is now known worldwide. It was a tale spread orally until 1812 when the brothers Grimm recorded it. The initial meaning within the tale is primarily to promote forest safety for children, but it also has a secondary meaning which is a caution regarding famine. Important messages are often hidden within the tale but they are often surrounded by the entertainment value and humor so they are enjoyable and well remembered.

Contemporary narratives such as fairy tales, ghost stores and rhymes are also considered to be folk narratives. The brothers Grimm are particularly well known for collecting and publishing folk tales in several collections of Grimm's Fairytales. The brothers Grimm were two German brothers who were academics. They collected narratives that could often be dark and violent but often with an underlying moral message traditional to folk narrative. They popularized stories such as Cinderella, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. These are considered to be modern tales but are still folk narratives.
